Jefferson City, MO — Missouri Lt. Governor David Wasinger, joined by other statewide elected attorneys, has requested repeal of the divisive mandate requiring attorneys to complete Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) training as part of their annual Continuing Legal Education (CLE). Leading a letter to the Missouri Supreme Court, Wasinger called for the removal of this requirement, asserting that it detracts from CLE’s primary purpose—enhancing legal knowledge and maintaining professional competence—and instead advances a political agenda.

“Missouri attorneys should not be forced to undergo politically charged training to maintain their licenses,” said Lt. Gov. Wasinger. “This indoctrination does not enhance the ability of attorneys to serve their clients or uphold the law.”

The letter described the rule as unnecessary, counterproductive, and rooted in political ideology rather than professional development. It emphasized that terms like “implicit bias” and “cultural competency” have become highly politicized, and requiring such training undermines the unity and professionalism of Missouri’s legal community. Wasinger and his colleagues called for the removal of the mandate and advocated for attorneys to have the freedom to choose ethics CLE topics that align with their professional needs.

Lt. Governor Wasinger emphasized the critical role of Continuing Legal Education in keeping attorneys informed about legal developments and ensuring they uphold the highest standards of competence. He and his colleagues argued that CLE requirements should focus on substantive education rather than ideology, aligning with the values and practical needs of Missouri attorneys.

“CLE is an essential opportunity for attorneys to stay current on the law and provide competent legal representation,” said Wasinger. “However, it should never be a platform for political indoctrination or divisive ideologies. Missouri attorneys deserve training that is relevant, meaningful, and focused on helping them serve their clients and uphold the law—not mandates that impose unnecessary and politicized agendas.”
