Lt. Governor Peter Kinder statement on President Obama same-sex marriage flip
JEFFERSON CITY – Missouri Lt. Governor Peter Kinder today issued the following statement on President Barack Obama's support for same-sex marriage:
“Last night, North Carolina became the 31st state to do what Missourians did eight years ago – pass a constitutional amendment affirming traditional marriage. Eight years before Missourians acted by a margin of 72 percent, I offered on the Senate floor the first bill in the state affirming traditional marriage and passed it through the Senate.
“It’s clear that President Obama, to get elected in 2008, made a political calculation and said he, too, was against same-sex marriage. Now, because it’s necessary to his fundraising and to distract voters from the dismal state of the economy and the unpopularity of his healthcare law, his views have ‘evolved.’
“Now more than ever, America needs leadership. It’s disappointing that the president would, through cynical political calculation, flip-flop to advocate a position that is counter to what obviously is the view of a large majority of Americans – support for traditional marriage between a man and woman.”
